AN Alvechurch cricket club have been bowled over by a new Government funded grant.

Alvechurch and Hopwood Cricket Club teamed up with the sports development team at Bromsgrove District Council to bid for a slice of cash awarded by Sports England's Sportsmatch.

Sportsmatch uses money from the Government to encourage grassroots community sport.

Supported by the council’s expertise in securing grants, the Birmingham Road-based club successfully bid for a grant of £1,119.

The grant matched the sponsorship money gained from local business, Clifford Springs Ltd.

And there has been more good news for the club after they were awarded the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Clubmark Accreditation.

The ECB works with Sport England on the pioneering club accreditation scheme, which develops vibrant and healthy cricket club infrastructures.

Accreditation is given to clubs that are continually striving to provide the best for its members, and the wider community.

Pete Gwilliam, a junior coach and committee member at the club, said: “In our youth and juniors section we are committed to using the clubmark framework to pave the way for growth and success in the future.

“Winning the bid means that we can significantly improve our facilities which will allow us to increase the amount of sessions we can offer existing and new members.”

Councillor Michael Webb, whose portfolio covers leisure and culture, said: “We are delighted our sports development team could help the club win the bid, and help get more young people playing sport.

“I believe the only way is up for them now.”

Anyone interested in becoming a member is invited to meet the committee and players at a gathering at the club, on the night of Tuesday, February 12.
