AN electrical technican from Redditch recently graduated as a weapons engineer from HMS Collingwood as he completed his Phase 2 training with Victory Squadron.

Originally from Redditch, Jake Byford, aged 18, joined the Royal Navy in April 2012.

The former pupil of Arrow Vale High School and keen football fan, said of his training at HMS Collingwood: “I have enjoyed my time here and I look forward to my next draft.”

Mr Byford joined the Maritime Warfare School at HMS Collingwood five months ago after completing his basic training at HMS Raleigh.

Here he undertook the Weapons Engineering Training Course, learning about the Royal Navy’s weapon systems, safety procedures, electrical and electronic repair techniques and the basics of hydraulics and pneumatics.

He also received practical training in a range of essential tools and techniques. After successfully completing the course, Mr Byford is now joining HMS Lancaster to exercise his training in a practical setting.

HMS Collingwood is the home of the Maritime Warfare School which contributes to the operational capability of the fleet by providing first class training to all officers and ratings of the Royal Navy in their professional specialisations which include, weapon engineering, communications, and warfare.

The training they receive is relevant, agile and flexible in order to keep pace with the challenging operational needs.
