A REDDITCH woman who has cared for her husband through a number of strokes over the past 20 years, was awarded a Life After Stroke certificate from the Stroke Association.
Jen Cottle received her certificate from ITV’s Central Tonight news presenter Bob Warman along with nine other people from across the West Midlands, after being nominated by family and friends.
She cares for her husband Jim, who was an active member of the Rotary Club before a stroke lefthim with communication difficulties, short term memory loss, and mobility difficulties.
Accepting her certificate, Mrs Cottle, said: “I am so grateful for all the support I have had from the team at the Stroke Association. Following Jim’s strokes I have encouraged him to participate in anything he is interested in rather than worrying about further strokes happening. I try to ensure he gets as much from life as possible.”
Mrs Cottle helps her husband with all his daily activities, supporting him in leisure and social activities and providing emotional support.
Speaking at the ceremony, Bob Warman added: “The courage of all the nominees is inspiring. A stroke can have a devastating impact on people’s lives including their families. Jen has provided outstanding care to help Jim have a good life after his stroke.”
Another Redditch resident, Dennis Hill, was also among the nominees, winning the National Life after Stroke Volunteer award earlier this year and representing the region at the National awards in London in June.
Hugh Tibbits, regional head of operations from the Stroke Association in the West Midlands, said: “It is very humbling to see how people have rebuilt their lives after stroke. If you know a stroke survivor, carer, volunteer or professional, let them know how remarkable they are by nominating them for a Life After Stroke Award.”
People can nominate someone for a 2013 Life After Stroke Award until Friday, March 1, 2013, either online at stroke.org.uk/LASA, or they can call 0207 566 1540 or email lasa@stroke.org.uk to be sent a form through the post.
