Arson at Redditch sports shop

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to an incident in which a rocket firework was set off in a Redditch sports shop.

It happened in Sports Direct in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre at around 2pm on Thursday, October 18.

Two men went into the store and put the firework inside a pair of tracksuit bottoms hanging on a stand.

They activated the firework which ignited and burnt through the clothing and then launched across the store, filling the shop with thick smoke.

Police are trying to trace customers who were in the shop at the time and may have seen what happened.

PC Martyn Dudley of West Mercia Police said: "Nobody was injured and only the tracksuit bottoms were damaged but this had potential to be serious."

One man has been arrested on suspicion of arson and has been released on police bail, pending further inquiries.

Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact PC Dudley on the non-emergency number 101 quoting incident 99-n-181012 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

I believe the law bans fireworks to the under 18's or under 21's.
