Gurkha officer joins TA ranks
Major Krishna Gurung.
Major Krishna Gurung.

THE Territorial Army in Redditch has welcomed one of the highest ranking Gurkha officers in the country into its ranks.

Major Krishna Gurung, who has spent 30 years serving in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Germany, Jamaica, Kenya and the US, has taken up the full-time post of quartermaster at 37 Signal Regiment (Volunteers) in Winyates.

Growing up in Bhangara, in Mid Western Nepal, he said that he always aspired to join the British Army because of the pride and prestige attached to being a part of it.

Major Gurung, who is married and has two grown-up children, said: "I'm looking forward to this new opportunity.

"This new job with the TA will involve providing support to the regiment in many different aspects of daily life. It's something that I haven't done before, so it's a totally new challenge."

The regiment's mission is to provide radios, IT networks and satellite-based systems to enable military forces to assist civil authorities in the event of floods or national crisis.

Major Gurung added: "I've always worked in an environment where British soldiers are mixed in with the Gurkha element and I know that we have very different cultures.

"But with that brings different strengths and weaknesses, which often makes for a better team.

"In the Army, you are presented with opportunities all the time and it's up to you to grasp them.

"And in moving to this new post with the TA, that is exactly what I'm doing."
