Church marks 300th birthday
A HOLLYWOOD Unitarian church recently celebrated its 300th anniversary.
On Sunday, May 18, a capacity congregation gathered at Kingswood Meeting House to celebrate 300 years to the day that the original trust deed was signed.
The deed, which is still in the congregation's possession, allowed for the building of a chapel on Dark Lane, Hollywood. The original chapel lasted 83 years until destroyed by fire during a riot. The chapel was rebuilt on Packhorse Lane, Hollywood, where it still stands today.
The congregation were treated to spectacular music - including Widor's Toccata - played by organist Peter Flower on the new organ installed a year ago. In addition to the enthusiastic hymn-singing, the chapel choir sang a piece.
Commemorative medals were also available, designed by Hamish Bowie, whose shop is at Manor Farm, Earlswood.
Chapel minister, the Rev Anthony Howe, said: "This was a wonderful day. We were delighted so many people came to celebrate.
"Our chapel has a long and colourful history. We were one of the first places of worship in the area to be served by a woman minister back in 1961, and we continue to be a beacon of liberal and inclusive religion. We're famous for our warm welcome and our non-dogmatic approach to faith, and we look forward to the future."
In the last two years the congregation has more than doubled, a new organ has been installed, the choir re-established, a new heating system installed in the hall, new pew cushions purchased, and there are more improvements planned.
Anthony added "Our Tercentenary Service was just the start of celebrations. Our next event is an open day and concert taking place on Saturday, July 19 from 2pm. Everyone is welcome."
More details about the chapel and its present day activities are available at www.kwunitarians.co.uk.
