Rhys is set fore Golf success
REDDITCH youngster Rhys Hopkins is well on his way to a possible appearance at the home of golf after qualifying for the next stage of a national tournament.
Rhys, aged seven, has won through to the next round of the HSBC Wee Wonders' championship after triumphing in a local qualifier at Worcestershire Golf Club, Malvern. The tournament first started ten years ago and was set up to give girls and boys the opportunity to enjoy competitive golf in a fun and sporting atmosphere.
The Harry Taylor First School pupil had 36 shots on par three holes and had to see how far he could get around the course, with the position after the last shot measured.
He is a regular at the Inkberrow Golf Academy, where he receives tuition from professional Chris Stanley,
His father Greg said Rhys has always been interested in the game.
He said: "Rhys also plays football but he seems to really have an aptitude and interest in golf and talks non stop about the game at home.
"I brought him his first set of clubs two years ago but it really took off when Chris took him under his wing and showed him things like the swing and the follow through.
"I play golf myself to a not very high level, but it looks like Rhys might really take things on and possibly make a career in the game or at least compete at it in years to come."
And it was almost a double family celebration as Rhys' brother Kyan just missed out in the six and under category.
Rhys will now go forward to the regional qualifiers to be played at the Derbyshire course next month with the national finals at St Andrews in August.
