A MUSICAL celebration coming to Malvern Theatres will explore ritual and magic in African cultures.
Afrodisiac, devised by composer Charlie Barber, brings together respected musicians Seckou Keita and Chartwell Dutiro. Keita is leading kora player, while Durito is an ethnomusicologist and performer of the mbira, the Zimbabwean ‘thumb piano’.
Audiences will hear moon love spells and Haitian voodoo songs, Brazilian dances and Ghanaian tribal cult music.
“I wanted to find a way to combine classical European traditions with the culture of Africa and the African diaspora,” said Barber.
“The theatrical structure of the performance is a series of episodes that take place between sunset and dawn.”
Afrodisiac will be performed at Malvern Theatres on Wednesday, October, 27.
