THE date of Redditch Choral Society Christmas Concert has been announced - Saturday, December 2.

The popular concert, being held in St Stephen's Church, will feature a touching tribute to the group’s founder and accomplished musician, singer and pianist Alma Bright-Clarke.

Alma passed away at her home in Studley on Monday, May 22 after a short illness.

Bridget Quinn, from the group, said preparations are progressing well for the concert.

"We hope to have a special treat with the choir performing a piece of music composed to honour the legacy that Alma has given to the classical music world in Redditch, and beyond," she said.

"The piece is simply called 'Alma' and is composed by Ruth Chann, another ex-pupil who is now composing music for the BBC and The Royal Shakespeare Company."

Since the death of Alma, the group has been under the directorship of Helen and Emily Tyrrell who are both members of the choir and trained musicians.

Helen is directing and conducting the first part of the concert which includes a selection of both well-loved and lesser known Christmas carols sung by the choir and also by pupils from St Mary's Catholic Primary School in Studley.

Emily is directing and conducting excerpts from Handel's Messiah for the second part of the concert.

Professional soloist Katie Leaver (soprano) and Brett Elesmore (tenor) are once again performing - both of the soloists are local and have been Alma's pupils.

The professional orchestra will be led, as usual, by Peter Bridle.

Tickets are available from 07794 362956 or from the Christian Word Bookshop at St Stephen's Church.

They are £12 (concessions £10) and include interval refreshments.
