PEOPLE are being invited to a exhibition profiling a number of illustrators at different stages of their careers.
Illustration Beats Explanation, at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum, explores how artists use comics, storyboards, graphics and drawings to convey new ideas.
William Hogarth’s Marriage à-la Mode collection of prints will be among the 100 rarely displayed artwork, as well as work by famous caricaturists and illustrators such a Punch cartoonist Sir Bernard Partridge, Ronald Searle, the creator of St Trinian’s, and Ralph Steadman, best known for his work with Hunter S Thompson.
The event will also feature three distinct exhibitions curated by Nathaniel Pitt, whose gallery Division of Labour will bring contemporary examples of illustration from across the country.
Philippa Tinsley, senior curator at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum, said: “This exhibition is a fantastic exploration of illustration in its all forms, from work by living artists to work dating back to the 1700s.
“It’s great to be able to show some rarely-seen works from the museum’s collection as well as the contemporary work Nathaniel is bringing to the exhibition.
“It’s also wonderful to be able to show children’s work in the gallery and to see how the collection has fired their imaginations.”
The exhibition runs until September 21, and is open Monday to Saturday from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
Entry is free.
