Review – Rock ‘n’ Roll Heaven at the Festival Theatre, Malvern, from Tuesday, August 26 to Saturday, August 30, 2014.

THESE tribute shows keep rolling off the production line and look set to ensure that some of the big names of yesteryear simply never fade away.

Many of the stars from the days of rock may have gone – the big ‘O’, Elvis and Buddy to name but three, but their legacy, their music, just refuses to die.

Doing the rounds at the moment is Rock ‘n’ Roll Heaven and it really is an brilliant blast from the past.

Edward Handoll’s ‘Ricky Nelson’ opened the proceedings well enough although his voice appeared a shade weak initially, while Jonny Labey was ‘Eddie Cochran’ to a tee, looking the part with a strong and solid performance.

Another strong voice was that of Damien Edwards who sounded like the ‘Del Shannon’ many of the audience would have remembered, and it would have been good to have heard a little more of him especially as many of those watching might well have seen the original in action.

Although far from full there was nothing lacking in terms of atmosphere and enthusiasm, especially in the stalls where the antics of two octogenarian ladies was little short of exhausting!

They obviously had a great time especially with Lee Memphis King capturing the King himself, Elvis, so well in terms of both the voice and mannerisms, and if that wasn’t good enough Edward Handoll more than redeemed himself with a near perfect Buddy Holly. Simply brilliant - it could so easily have been a reincarnation.

The second half featured them all again but with the superb addition of Roy Orbison - aka Damien Edwards - and once again each ensured power-packed performances including a finale which once again brought everyone to their feet and wanting more.

The backing from the band was excellent even though the drummer could easily have been accused of being a tad over the top at times. But it was that sort of night...

However, here was further evidence on show that the tribute production line is still working well. Thank Heaven!
