Sam Smith has yet another reason to smile. He’s topping off his award-winning week by becoming the first act to top the albums chart with sales that include streams.

Sam, 22, who won two Brit awards this week to add to the four Grammy titles, has beaten rivals including Ed Sheeran and Royal Blood in a close-run race to top the Official Albums Chart.

This is the first week in which the chart reflects audio streaming of albums from services such as Spotify, Deezer, Google Play, Napster, O2 Tracks, Xbox Music, Rdio and Rara.

Sam’s debut album In The Lonely Hour finished with a combined chart sales figure of 41,000, ahead of Ed Sheeran’s X on 38,000.

The two albums were the biggest of the week on both physical/download sales and album streams. In The Lonely Hour claimed 38,000 album sales and 2,900 album streams, while X claimed just under 35,000 album sales and 3,400 album streams.

“Many congratulations to Sam Smith. It has already been a huge year for him, following his Grammy and Brit Awards triumphs – and he can now add claiming number one in this week’s historic Official Albums Chart,” said Official Charts Company chief executive Martin Talbot.

“It is an especially impressive achievement given the strength of the competition. Sam and Ed are both established as genuine superstars now – and the fact that they appeal to fans who buy CDs, snap up album downloads and stream music highlights just how broad their appeal is.”

Royal Blood’s self-titled album grew by 11 times following their appearance at this week’s Brit Awards, pushing them to the number three spot. The chart sales of the album soared from 2,500 in the three days before the show, to 27,000 days later. This was made up from 26,000 album sales and 1,000 album streams.

Fellow Brit winner George Ezra’s Wanted On Voyage is at number four this week with chart sales of 22,000, ahead of Taylor Swift’s album 1989, which sold 15,000 copies to complete the top five. Swift performed at the Brits and went on to win best international female solo artist.

Hozier’s Take Me To Church spends its third week in a row at number two while former number one – and the Brit’s best British single – Uptown Funk, by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, holds firm at number three. The Weeknd’s track, called Earned It, is a non-mover at number four.

They proudly sit among the popular songs to have seen over one million streams. Uptown Funk had 1.8 million streams, Take Me To Church had 1.78 million, The Weeknd’s Earned It had 1.49 million while Ed Sheeran’s track Thinking Out Loud had 1.4 million streams.
