CD - Merriweather Post Pavilion - Animal Collective

THE ninth full-length album from Animal Collective looks set to go cruelly by the wayside.

The fact that the band has reached album number nine without much hype or publicity or most people knowing who they are is a shame because they are actually quite good.

The only problem is that the band can easily be summed up in two words - hard work.

And their new album, Merriweather Post Pavilion, is no different.

It’s obvious that a lot of time and effort, as well as feeling and emotion, has gone into the album but it is definitely a grower.

It’s not an album which you can just sit down and listen to once or twice to get it or even appreciate it, you have to let it suck you in and engulf you.

One song flows into the next creating a kind of prog-rock concept album with lots of reverb, echo and delay creating a very dreamlike ambience.

That put with recurring themes of psychedelia, folk-rock and jazz, and you get a sound like a cross between the Beach Boys on acid and Sigur Ros on speed.

If you like Kid A by Radiohead or late 1990’s Aphex Twin and are feeling brave, give it a try.
