THERE are definitely more hits than misses on Hard Candy and the heavy beats of hit single 4 Minutes lend themselves to winding the car windows down and driving along with the stereo at full volume in a perfect moment of summery goodness.
However it also smells a little bit desperate, as if Madonna is following the trends rather than setting them for once. The ubiquitous Timbaland features as a producer, and vocal appearances from Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, Pharrell Williams and Kanye West throw into question whether this really feels like a Madonna album at all.
At times tracks like Miles Away and She's Not Me leave you hoping she hasn't launched into a bizarre and public confession about her personal life, because with lines like "You wake up in the morning next to your new lover. She might cook you breakfast, and love you in the shower," the album edges into that uncomfortable feeling that comes from being dragged into someone else's relationship row.
Despite Hard Candy essentially being pretty good, Madonna fans might be disappointed by its lack of innovation, and the general listening public won't have enough of a reason to add this latest effort to their collection, when there are far better Madonna albums on offer out there.
