FOUR out of five workers fear they will lose their jobs as recession looms, while most struggle on their current salary, according to new research.

A survey of 2,000 workers by employment law firm Peninsula also showed that two out of three had considered taking on a second job to help pay rising bills.

More than 80% of those questioned said they did not feel their job was secure, a rise of 8% over a similar survey two months ago.

Peter Done, managing director of Peninsula, said it was clear that job security in the run-up to Christmas was a “major concern”, adding: “Over the years, it is during the last few months of the year when job losses seem to occur and this year is set to be no different.

“Many workers are looking for a second job not only for the extra income but also to give them more employment security should they lose their other job.

“As we head closer towards the impending recession, there is less confidence in the economy as a whole and this can be seen with monetary falls in varying sectors, from retail to manufacturing.

“It is important for employers to be open and honest with employees so that they have a clear indication of what is going on; this will help them accept the issue of redundancy a little easier.”
