SHOW YOUR APPRECIATION

With Father's Day (June 15) falling on the first Sunday of the World Cup, and three matches scheduled for that very afternoon, tearing dad away from the big screen could be a sport in itself.

So instead, why not locate one or two of his favourite tipples, pull up a chair, and enjoy some quality time with the old man.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Scottish craft beer specialists Innis & Gunn have created a new barrel-aged brew by maturing the beer for 30 days in casks sourced from Scotland's five malt-whisky producing regions. It's then blended to produce a deep amber ale that's rich and complex with faraway toffee, biscuity malt, a hint of spice and finishing with a nice whisky kick. Innis & Gunn Malt Whisky Trail Limited Edition (£35, 12 single-boxed 33cl bottles, 7.4%, www.shop.innisandgunn.com)

CAPE CRUSADER

With more flavour than you might expect from a sauvignon blanc, Te Mata Estate Cape Crest 2011, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand (£17.99, www.newzealandhouseofwine.co.uk) is barrel-fermented with a touch of semillon and sauvignon gris (a sauvignon blanc varietal) to create this top-notch white from NZ's oldest winery. With concentrated flavours of gooseberry pie and custard, guava, nectarine, passion fruit and lime with a subtle hint of vanilla on the long, exquisite, minerally finish, it's a tasting adventure waiting to be uncorked.

PUNCHING ABOVE ITS WEIGHT

A robust red to rival some of the tastiest New World cabernet sauvignon, Westend Estate The Boxer Durif 2012, Australia (£8.99, www.laithwaites.co.uk) is made from the durif grape which is brambly, spicy and solid, and at 15% abv, this opulent wine is dangerously easy to drink. With similar black cherry and succulent plummy notes of a cab sav, The Boxer has loads of lush forest fruits, spicy oak, a lick of soil and fine-grained tannins on the long, supple finish adding structure to this broad-shouldered wine.

HORSING AROUND

Winemaking and polo are all part of the Chilean lifestyle, and you can get both at the award-winning Casa Silva winery, where visitors can ride horses among the vineyards, then sample some of their tantalisingly smooth reds, like the Casa Silva Pintao Carmenere 2012, Colchagua Valley, Chile (£9.99, Marks & Spencer). With a polo player on the label, this medium-bodied, silky carmenere is beautifully textured with layers of wild berry fruits, subtle spice and velvety tannins on the gorgeous finish that's well worth saddling up for.

JACK OF ALL TRADES

Not your average bottle of JD, Jack Daniel's Single Barrel, Tennessee (£47, 70cl, www.thewhiskyshop.com) is a rather more refined version of the iconic Jack Daniel's Old No 7, America's bestselling whiskey. The status of 'Single Barrel' signals a smooth whiskey with notes of vanilla, nuts and peaches with real depth of flavour and caramel, malt and oak on the long, lingering finish. To make a lasting impression on Father's Day, the bottle can be engraved (as part of the cost) when bought from The Whisky Shop online.

COLLECTOR'S ITEM

This year, for the first time in The Glenlivet's 190-year history, the Glenlivet Guardians' Chapter Exotic Expression (£55.95, 70cl, 48.7% abv, £55.95, www.thewhiskyexchange.com) - of which only a few thousand bottles have been created - has been chosen by loyal followers of the Guardians of Glenlivet as the whisky they want to drink. Given a choice of three cask collection single malts, the marmalade, fruitcake and honeyed soft fruits with a long, rich finish and a hint of sherry wood and spice was the winning formula this members-only club voted for.

FOREVER 21

Delicious as a sipping rum or in a chi chi cocktail, Appleton Estate 21 Year Old Rum, Jamaica (£140, 70cl, www.thewhiskyexchange.com) is closer to a malt whisky or cognac than a traditional golden rum. The blend of rums have been aged for a minimum of 21 years, and a rum virtuoso will adore the power and richness on the palate with wood, nuts and sweet spice giving way to dried fruit, cinnamon and vanilla with beautiful depth of flavour and finesse on the finish.

A CHAMPAGNE FOR CHAMPIONS

Dad not bothered by the football? Perhaps he's more interested in the Formula One World Championship? In which case, hand him the winning laurel crown with the Limited Edition G H Mumm Cordon Rouge Formula One Brut NV, France (£33.50, Sainsbury's). With a Number 1 printed on the front, this easy-drinking prized champers, from the official F1 sponsors, is far too good to be wasted on spraying around...
